What can I expect from an acupuncture treatment for my pet?
Acupuncture needles are very small (about as thick as a strand of hair). Some locations may be sensitive, but most patients do not feel the needles once they are in place. Most patients will relax during the acupuncture treatment. The needles normally stay in place for 20 minutes. After acupuncture, your pet may be more tired or relaxed that day. Improvement may be seen immediately after acupuncture or may take a few days. The effects of acupuncture are generally cumulative, so it will likely take a few treatments to achieve maximal effects.
How frequently does my pet need to be treated?
As my mentor says, “It depends.” Normally, new patients are treated every 1-2 weeks for the first 4 treatments, then the frequency is decreased. Some patients need to continue acupuncture every month and some patients only need it quarterly. “It depends.”
Where can my pet be treated?
Services are provided in the comfort of your own home to reduce the stress associated with visits to the veterinary clinic. I can examine and treat your pet in any area of your home that your pet is comfortable.
Are Chinese herbal medicines safe?
As with any medications, Chinese herbal medications need to be used under the supervision of a properly trained veterinarian. There is a potential for interaction with other herbs or medications, so your veterinarian must know all supplements or medications that your pet is currently receiving. I prescribe most Chinese herbal medications from Jing Tang Herbal because of their stringent quality control practices.
What about my regular vet?
The best veterinary care comes in the form of a team. That includes your regular veterinarian. I generally send a referral letter to your regular veterinarian after the initial consultation and then send regular updates as well. Redwood Animal Acupuncture does not offer comprehensive veterinary services, so you will need to maintain a relationship with your regular veterinarian. Please ask your regular veterinarian to e-mail (info@redwoodanimalacupuncture.com) your pet’s records to us before your appointment.
